New York Yankees Information
This powerhouse team is home to legends like DiMaggio, Gehrig, Babe Ruth Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle - to name a few. Whether one likes them or not the Yankees remain the barometer of success in baseball today. As the defending 2009 World Series Champions, the Yankees are looking to do what few have done before, repeat as World Champions.
In the offseason, the team made a few moves to help get them there. In early December, the team was a part of a 3-team, 7-player trade in which the Yankees acquired CF Curtis Granderson from the Detroit Tigers and one day later inked LHP Andy Pettitte to a one year $11.75 million contract. In late December, the team traded Melky Cabrera, Mike Dunn and Arodys Vizcaino to the Braves for pitchers Javier Vasquez and Boone Logan. One day later, the team signed Nick Johnson to a 1 year $5.5 million contract and in late January signed Randy Winn. Finally, on February 28th, Chan Ho Park inked a one year $1.2 million deal.
The projected pitching rotation looks to be LHP CC Sabathia, RHP A.J. Burnett, LHP Andy Pettitte, RHP Javier Vasquez, RHP Phil Hughes or RHP Joba Chamberlain.
The projected Bullpen looks to be RHP Mariano Rivera (Closer), RHP Joba Chamberlain or RHP Phil Hughes, RHP Dave Robertson, LHP Damaso Marte, LHP Boone Logan, RHP Alfredo Aceves and RHP Chad Gaudin.
The New York Yankees are quite possibly the most successful and most recognized sports team in the entire world. They've dominated baseball since the early 1900s and don't appear to be slowing down anytime soon. They play their home games in Yankee Stadium, located in the Bronx. "The Stadium" can hold more than 57,000 people, and is best known for the short porches in left and right field and for the hall of fame plaques located in the left center bullpen. Before each of Roger Clemens' starts, he would walk out to the area and rub the "head" of Babe Ruth for good luck.
Manager Joe Girardi is in the third and final year of a three year contract. After a disappointing first season with the Yankees in which the team failed to make the playoffs for the first time in 14 seasons, Girardi made up for it in the second season, leading the Bronx Bombers to their 40th American League Pennant and their 27th World Series Title. For the 2010 season, Girardi has changed his uniform number to 28 to signify the goal of his team, to reach their 28th World Series Title.
The lineup will lose a little with the loss of Johnny Damon but the team hopes that Granderson will get his strikeouts under control and have a better batting percentage against lefty pitchers.
